The situation in Maui seems to have fallen out of the news. The last report I can access is from CBS and is dated. It puts the missing list at under 400. Another story claims that 2,000 children are unaccounted for in the schools. That’s a pretty wide gap. Nonetheless, the most recent official death toll is 97. What the hell is going on?

I see all the stuff about DEWs and weather weapons. Maybe, I guess. But the lack of urgency in the press regarding so many missing says it all, doesn’t it? The local officials cared not at all, even during the fires. No water, no sirens, roadblocks on the escape route, and the governor talking about acquiring the land while the cremains were still smoking. Malfeasance all around.

They crossed the Rubicon (again), and already it’s a non-story. What is to become of America?

Every diagram of CO2 in the atmosphere shows a globe with an uninterrupted CO2 blanket high up somewhere giving the impression it actually is a layer. If it were a layer, then the CO2 theory would make sense, but it’s not a layer with only a concentration of one CO2 molecule for every 2500 other molecules. Brownian motion plus CO2 being a relatively heavy molecule guarantees there never will be a blanket of CO2 anywhere.

I’d like a credentialed scientist to give me enough information via a conversation to convince me that the CO2 theory has merit. My research and applying common sense tells me it’s bogus.

There is no need to follow the exact details of the paper, the gist of which is that the so-called “reality” is not in the world but is the result of the interaction of an observer with the said world, i.e. it is not “true” but only a MAP which happens to be useful to the observer and thus entirely dependent on the point of view.

It is an attempt to formally describe the contents of consciousness (i.e. EVERYTHING we see, feel and think), as such it is probably not an entirely reliable theory but rather a “scientific” account of more informal thoughts as related, for instance, in the movie Rashomon.

This perfectly explains why our opinions differ so much and are most often irreconcilable.
In the context of the Maui disaster it means that some genuinely believe in the “official” explanations despite the obvious lies and obfuscation. 🙂

I would assert that reality is in the world. Most of us, including me here in my living room in Texas, do not have adequate access to the facts of any of these jaw dropping events. So, trying to arrive at an accurate perception depends on looking through conflicting boxes of what is effectively circumstantial evidence and picking the right box. And even then needing to wait for a long time for the official narrative to confirm that I picked the right box. And that official confirmation may never even come.

Sometimes it is easy. I have no doubt that I chose correctly when I declined any and all Covid “vaccines.” And I’m confident that Victoria Nuland and her ilk are the true instigators of the Russia-Ukraine war. But who she really works for is still too murky for me. And so are the facts of the Maui fire.

In the absence of any positive news anywhere in the western world, then could we not generate some for ourselves?

I find myself despondent and depressed these days, whenever I access those news and views sites that I usually treasure. It seems every journalist and his wife are waiting in anxious limbo for the other shoe to fall, whilst piling on to tell us how that might go. I dare say I’m not alone in that feeling of hopelessness that “knowing shit” now brings.

But then I find myself at peace and often joyful when I leave the news cycle behind and instead spend my time in the garden, watering, harvesting, pruning, weeding, building new beds, nose to beak with my chucks, with the fragrances of herbs, grass and soil in the air, dirt under my nails, sweat trickling down my face. Alive and carefree, if only for that moment. It’s enough!

I know that alone there’s nothing I can do to “save the world” or even change it.

But, by putting my energy into setting myself free, economically as well as psychologically, one coliflower, one sweet-potato, one pound of strawberries at a time, I not only free myself economically, but I free my spirit from the nihilism induced by being “in the know”. – Corny as it sounds, being “in the now” in the garden is by far the better option for me, and by far the better use of my time.

To forget the world and all of its apparently unfixable brokenness, whilst fixing my own miniscule part in it, I can’t help but realise that the solutions we seek are right here at our finger-tips, available to us in this very moment.

Of course, that’s easy for me to say, having made my own bid for freedom from the Matrix a dozen years ago, now, at last, perched on my Portuguese mountainside with acres of land to grow on. That’s why I take the time to imagine what I’d do if I still lived in the city.

And what I’d do, I’ve mentioned on these pages before. I’d reach out to my neighbours and connect with those interested in creating a food production and distribution cooperative. I’d pontificate on the benefits of garden sharing, developing green-spaces as communal food gardens, of community stores of produce, tools, skills and time.

And I’d loose myself in the moment every time my hands touched the soil to lift a potato plant, the world and its woes be damned.

Of course, it’s not all about gardening. We need drivers and mechanics and engineers and fabricators and menders and builders… We need people to make the tables to put the food on. It’s just that my own thing is gardening. That doesn’t mean that gardening is the only thing!

Who knows? Maybe if you join me in your own bid for freedom and economic independence, be you in the city, in the country or in the suburbs, maybe, just maybe we can swerve the implosion of western civilisation and begin a whole new chapter in our evolutionary story.

And if we can’t, well so what! At least we get to chanel our energies into positive creativity whilst we live. – That’s got to beat the mother-f***ing-shit out of despondency and nihilism, and waiting for the end.

It’s a fact worth knowing that you can be lifting your first crop of spuds just three months after planting.

Over the last few days I have read many of your articles on WW II. One thing that has always puzzled me is a significant omission in the treaty between England, France and Poland in which England and France promised to come to Poland’s aid if attacked by Germany. As I understand it, there is something solid “out there” which you, me, and any other human perceive as the artifact which we have learned to call a “car”, but…
The actual totality of this “object” is NOT at all similar to what we perceive.

This is obvious for the extreme scales of the microscopic or cosmologic, atoms are not “small balls”, black holes are not “large balls” (there is no more consistent time or space in their vicinity), so it is the same for ordinary objects like chairs or coffee cups they are (probably…) somewhat similar to their appearance to us but not quite.

This is the whole point of the “The Interface Theory of Perception” paper which demonstrate that Evolutionary speaking warped perceptions are better than more realistic ones, and thus our perceptions are very likely not “veridical”, though the concept of veridical is itself questionable.

As for my own position I am neither materialist nor idealist, like the paper authors I think that so-called reality is not at all what it appears to be.

I don’t believe either that anything can be called “veridical”, absolutely ALL that we see, feel or think is our private perception, it is only an image of the world (reality) and always an image, there is no way to reach the “Ding an Sich” of Kant.

It seems you endorse the Platonic/Aristotelian view that what truly “exists” is described by some ontology, i.e. an absolute static view valid for all observers (the so-called “View from God”), and you state your own assumptions about it.

I am not a believer in such ontologies whatever they may contain, to me and for any sentient being there are only TWO things that can be said to exist, himself (the Cartesian “cogito ergo sum”) and the world at large which contains everything, including the sentient being, but which cannot be more precisely described.

Everything else is an elaboration of the mind of the sentient being and most certainly cannot be said to “exist” in the Platonic sense because it is private to the said being.

JDAM ‘s and Hamas rockets each have very distinctive — and very different — sounds. As you can hear in the video of the hospital being bombed, that was a JDAM.

Note also that JDAM’s are precision ordnance, landing within five feet of the selected aiming point. Israel not only bombed that hospital, but chose to bomb it, knowing it was packed with refugees.

The idea of a JDAM killing 500-1000 is equally ridiculous.

The death toll is from the hospital’s weapons depot cooking off. (1)

Further casting doubt on the claims made by Hamas that the IDF was responsible is that even pro-Gaza sources say that a misfired Hamas rocket is what struck the hospital, and that the blast detonated munitions that had been stockpiled there.

Iranian Hamas is 100% responsible for turning the location into an ammo dump.

I’m reminded of Shireen Abu Akleh and how they lied about deliberately killing her.

With Shireen, their lies trickled through a bit more slowly, but it was educational to see how Israel writhed in its own skin throughout the entire fiasco, finally apologizing so many months after the fact.

They did the same for the other elderly man who they basically suffocated.

These two got attention just because both happened to be American citizens. Others they lied about are too numerous to remember off hand.

It might have been gross incompetence but it was probably intentional, as a mosque has also been destroyed, according to a Turkish TV channel I am watching. Despite their own blind spots, there is no hemming or hawing here, they take it for granted Israel bombed the hospital.

I suspect so — the whole point of a JDAM is to put the bomb exactly where you want it. It just goes to show how Israel is no longer ‘one of us.’

Back in the day — the day of Ben Gurion and Golda Meir and Abba Eban — Israel was run by relatively sophisticated, Westernized, Ashkenazi Jews; Golda Meir had taught school in Milwaukee. They knew what would play in Peoria, and they took care to cast themselves that way. To the casual observer, Israel was ‘nice.’ They probably bathed, whereas the Palestinians probably didn’t. Now, they deliberately bomb a hospital, and at first even boast about it — only realizing after the fact that maybe that’s not too cool. These guys — unlike the earlier generation — can’t even fake it. They’re clowns who show up at the UN with cartoon story boards for arguments and boast about inventing the cherry tomato.

Indeed. And what I noticed when I started following this around 2000 is that Israel’s lying is on a whole different plane.

Israel, I noticed, was different. They don’t just lie incoherently, or occasionally. They lie continually, and the lies fit together to form a structure of almost dizzying complexity, a kind of cathedral of lies. Looked at dispassionately, it’s really almost amazing.

4. On Tuesday, after the al-Ahli bombing, Israeli Spokesman Hananya Naftali, working directly under PM Netanyahu, openly stated that “Israeli Air Force struck a Hamas terrorist base inside a hospital in Gaza.” He then abruptly deleted it.

4. Video “evidence” for a Hamas misfire presented by Israel (on X) bore a timestamp inconsistent with the timing of the Al-Ahli bombing. It was proven to be footage more than one year old. When this was discovered, Israel deleted it from their message.

5. Open source video evidence also showed that the incoming missle did not appear to be a fragment of an exploded and misfired rocket. Its sound and flight was consistent with missles typically used by Israel, not Hamas.

6. Al Jazeera Arabic captured at least 7 Israeli airstrikes within 10 minutes of the al-Ahli hospital bombing, giving the lie to the IDF’s claim that it was not active in the area.

7. Israel presented “evidence” of Hamas operatives talking about their alleged “missle misfire”. It’s since been proven to be fake.

Given the preponderance of evidence that Israel has falsified information repeatedly after the bombing, and given the astronomical odds against a misfired Hamas rocket making such a precise strike on a hospital that Israel not only threatened to strike, but *did* strike three days prior to the larger bombing, examination of crater sizes and other damage done to al-Ahli hospital hardly make the case for Israel.

All evidence points to Israeli culpability. They’ve got more munitions than JDAM missles, so the Hamas misfire/JDAM argument is likely a false dichotomy.

I remember the lengthy Encyclopedia Americana article on Israel, 1970 edition. We owned a set and I read the encyclopaedia a great deal as a child. It made little effort to be even-handed – a photo of kibbutz children being looked after was shown, apparently taken in the 1950s or early 1960s. It was noted that this particular kibbutz was founded by Jews from the USA. A Romanian-born farmer driving a tractor was shown – it was noted that he had a rifle by his side to deter “marauders” (it looked like one of the Czechoslovak Mausers sold or donated en masse to Jews before 1948 – it helped them outgun the Arabs in the war).
Israel were seen as on the “right” side in the Cold War, whereas Egypt, Syria etc. had a lot of Soviet equipment.

Of course Israel is going to be less successful than Nazi Germany. Where the Nazis sought to make a fascistic national community out of an actual nation, the Zionists are forcing it upon a collection of peoples who actually have very little in common: Yemeni Jews, Galician Jews, Moroccan Jews, German Jews…

Certainly as it was implemented, Israel was a terrible idea, and this keeps getting reflected in how it plays out. These people have to hate, and have to keep attacking their neighbors. It’s the only way they can maintain even a simulacrum of national identity. No enemy at the gates, no national community. No national community, no Israel.

Yeah. What I recall from literature in the Seventies — and from my own attitude — is that Israel’s legitimacy and goodness was taken for granted. Its right to exist was a given.

Now people shriek about that — precisely because Israel’s right to exist has become questionable.

The results either repeat hasbara (NBC, WSJ, USA Today) or they seek to foment doubt about who is responsible.

Speaking for myself, nearly twenty years ago I came to the conclusion that a statement from Israel merely indicates what Israel would like you to believe. It might be the truth, or it might not — Israel saying it is so does nothing to make it more likely. It merely demonstrates it dawned on her it would be a bad idea for people to think she bombed the hospital.

Another point is that Israel’s lies often aren’t even intended to be believed by the critical or independent observer. They’re merely manufactured to reassure those who need to believe: JackD et al, Wolf Blitzer, and so on. Take this nonsense about a Hamas rocket killing five hundred. Find me one instance of a single Hamas rocket killing five hundred. Five, maybe. Not five hundred. That lie not merely doesn’t convince me; it’s not even meant to convince me. It’s for JackD.

It’s amazing. As far as the honesty and courage of the media goes, we literally might as well be living in Nazi Germany. There’s no Goebbels calling a conference of the big editors and laying out this week’s line that I know of, but there might as well be.

Even the peripheral mumbles of dissent are reminiscent of Nazi Germany. Just as Tucker Carlson manages to keep from overflowing with praise for Israel, so there were papers in Nazi Germany that managed to hint at their actual opinions for a few years.

…and disproportionately, it is the Christians who have emigrated — like, say, to America. There are a number of perfectly good reasons for that, but at the end of the day, overseas Palestinians are more likely to be Christians than stay-at-home-and-get-the-boot-ground-into-your-face Palestinians.

I daresay much the same would happen if we pulled the plug on Israel. An article I just read mentioned that Israel had killed seven hundred Palestinians in the preceding twenty four hours. There was no indication that any effort was made to avoid civilians.

This is interesting; is intelligence an asset for ordinary combat infantrymen in modern warfare?

During the Second World War, the U S Army had something called the ‘Army Specialized Training Program’ where men who tested at least one standard deviation above the mean in intelligence were diverted into colleges to take courses allegedly relevant to the war effort. Otherwise, they weren’t a particularly elite group.

Well, in the winter of 1943, it became apparent the US Army was going to need riflemen a lot more than it was going to need French-speakers or whatever — so the program was cancelled and most of those in it summarily dumped into combat units as privates. Most infantry regiments received anything up to 1500 such individuals, but the 395th got three thousand. It arrived in England in October 1944.

So how did the 395th do?

‘…During the Battle of the Bulge, the regiment—at times virtually surrounded by Germans—was one of the few units that did not yield ground to the attacking Germans.[2]: 33  On at least six occasions they called in artillery strikes on or directly in front of their own positions. I’ve argued that — particularly in the case of the British — the enormous numbers of high-quality personnel sucked up by Bomber Command had to have had a deleterious effect on the army’s performance. One Lancaster’s crew, along with the associated mechanics and ground crew, would equal a markedly improved infantry company.

Back of the envelope, then, foregoing those thousand-plane raids would have meant thirty infantry divisions performing much better — plus simply a lot more personnel. Add in training establishments, the war plants — you’ve got an army with a good twenty percent more punch. Maybe a lot more, considering there must have been a lot more than a thousand Lancasters et al actually in service.

Of course, when it was all decided upon — 1940? — there wasn’t any other apparent way of taking the war to Germany, and there were some wildly exaggerated ideas of the potential effect. But if the British had chosen differently, they might have been able to land in Northwest Africa in early 1942, for example — which would have done a lot more to win the war sooner than anything Bomber Command did. Alternatively, a 1943 Overlord might have been feasible.

…or both! At any rate, morality aside, I think ‘Strategic Bombing’ was a very inefficient use of resources. The war could have been won sooner had the effort been made elsewhere.

Len Deighton in his novel Bomber wrote that the expense of training a Lancaster crew was about the same as sending them to Oxford or Cambridge for six years.
I think Britain’s postwar decline was in part due to the effort of maintaining the RAF Bomber Command offensive. Tens of thousands of British and Empire fatalities apart, it was just so damned expensive. The US economy could take on the costs of the 8th Air Force offensive but the British one was nearly wrecked by its efforts, and also became heavily in hock to the USA.
The British Army in WW2, on the other hand, was a shadow of what it had been in WW1, even if many senior officers had been junior officers in the earlier conflict.

According to Wikipedia, though (hardly proof of accuracy) 35,000 men from the RAF Regiment and the Royal Artillery were transferred to infantry units in 1944, because the infantry tended to have the lion’s share of casualties and needed replacements.

There’s also the irony that, while the 8th Air Force was if anything less effective at damaging actual German war production prior to mid-1944, it did make a more significant contribution to the success of the landings in France — albeit not in the way intended.

First, once the Eighth Air Force could escort its daylight raids over Germany, Luftwaffe day fighter losses swiftly became appalling. Surely this had much to do with the inability of the Luftwaffe to interfere with the struggle in Normandy. On the other hand, whatever Bomber Command did at night, it wasn’t going to shoot down many Me-109’s or Fw 190’s.

Second, of course, those massive B-17 strikes on German positions in Cobra et al really did work.

Night fighters were on occasion shot down by Bomber Command gunners, but they were few and far between. Quite frequently they returned to base with .303 bullet holes but the rifle-calibre machine-guns in British bombers were not greatly feared, and for the most part if gunners spotted approaching night fighters in time, the tracer fire’s disorientating and intimidating effect was more significant than the actual damage the bullets were likely to do. Significantly the night fighters were lethal right up to the end – over 1,000 RAF Bomber Command aircrew were killed in the month of April 1945, even if some of their planes were shot down by flak rather than night fighters. The day fighter force was largely out of action by then.

A rumour spread among German night fighter crews that British bombers were going to install a .50 calibre gun underneath, like those in US bombers. This worried the Germans as they often attacked from underneath, but apart from a few experimental examples it never happened. The Germans did fear .50 machine-guns although early US hopes that the gunners would be able to fight off German attacks in daytime proved to be too optimistic.

A rumour spread among German night fighter crews that British bombers were going to install a .50 calibre gun underneath, like those in US bombers. But turning into a box of B-17’s and beginning that head-on attack…one saw one’s life passing before one’s eyes.

! Aces aside, a program was initiated mid-war to share the wealth, so to speak. Pilots in the West, who were risking life and limb to eke out a few kills against Commonwealth and American pilots, would get to go East and run up their score, while those spoiled Eastern Front aces would have to come west and work for a living.

Earlier, the Red Air Force had a lot of issues.

1. They were still flying a lot of obsolete aircraft. Whatever the cutting edge aircraft, museum pieces like the I-16 were still being produced and flung into combat in large numbers through 1942. An inexperienced pilot in an I-16 versus a trained, experienced German in a Me-109G simply wasn’t a contest.

2. The Russians don’t seem to have believed in training. This is bad enough when it comes to infantrymen; it’s catastrophic when it comes to aircraft pilots. So many accounts of German kills involve seemingly oblivious Russian pilots. It must have been like getting the jump on the guy standing in front of you in line at the bus stop. Half of these guys must have had their hands full just staying in the air; they weren’t in a position to notice the German lining up on them.

3. Even when the Russians had nominally equal aircraft, the controls left a lot to be desired. For example, I read of a comparison between an Fw-190 and its Russian rival. Same speed, blah blah — but the Fw-190 took five motions to go from amblin’ along to full combat power.

The Russian aircraft took thirteen. So your (inadequately trained) Russian pilot is still fumbling with the controls while the Fw-190 has jumped to 400 mph and is coming around for the kill.

4. That famous Russian quality control. That inexperienced Russian I just mentioned is just figuring out that the control involved in step eight isn’t working today…when he dies. This must have been one reason the Russians were so enamored of mediocre aircraft such as the P-39. At least everything worked.

5. Utterly unrealistic tactics, thought up by someone with no actual experience of aerial combat. The Germans in 1941 couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

So put all these together — then assume everything is partially alleviated as the war wears on — and the picture becomes clear. As with the Red Army on the ground, the Russian Air Force started out from a position of total defeat, then gradually built itself up into a formidable force, learning by doing.

Red Air Force fighter pilots were ordered to ram Axis aircraft if they were out of ammo or had no other way to bring them down. Overmatched Soviet pilots may have started to do that on the very first day of Barbarossa, though they may simply have been mid-air collisions. The order was not quite kamikaze, but does argue a degree of desperation. The instruction was not lifted until October 1944.
The P-39 seems to have fitted the Red Air Force’s fighting style. Generally speaking combat in the East was relatively low-level. Fighting above 7,000 feet was rare. At that height the P-39 seems to have done well. Its armament was also liked.

Perhaps — but everywhere else it was detested. It only briefly served as a first-line aircraft in the Mediterranean and Western Europe. In the Pacific, it was regarded as a death trap. The version used there was the export P-400; it was swiftly christened ‘a P-40 with a Zero on its tail.’

I strongly suspect the Russians liked a lot of this gear for its reliability; after all, the best numbers in the world are meaningless if the Wunderwaffe won’t start. So a nominally unimpressive tank like the Sherman saw extensive use in the East right to the end of the war; even given the availability of a nominally superior tank like the T-34/85. After all, a Sherman that shows up is vastly superior to a T-34/85 that broke down fifty miles back. A P-39 that actually gets into the air and functions as expected is much better than a LaGG-5 that is still sitting on the runway.

Russian gear seems to have been really unreliable. I remember noticing that the Germans often seem to have been saved by the simple fact that all those awesome tank offensives would self-eviscerate right off the starting line. The __ Guards Tank Army would have 780 runners on Day One, 342 on Day Two, and 53 on Day Four. At that point, it wasn’t so hard to stop.

Telling in this connection is that British tanks enjoyed an excellent reputation among the Russians for reliability. British tanks were not reliable.

Some broke down faster than others. In Crusader, the British fielded primarily their own cruiser tanks and American M3 Stuarts.

The Stuart was nominally the inferior tank: high profile, a weaker main gun, and I believe thinner armor. But two weeks into the battle, a much higher proportion of the Stuarts were still listed as operational. They weren’t very safe, but they did keep running.

For this reason, although the Sherman is usually derided as a mediocre tank, it had its virtues. Specifically, it was much less likely to break down than a Panther or whatever, and so would seize the objective while the Panther was having an engine fire or whatever twenty miles back.

In 1941, Glantz supplies some spectacular figures for Soviet armor in the first days of Barbarossa. Soviet Armored Corps basically collapsed as soon as they tried to move. An enormous percentage of the tanks either wouldn’t run at all or broke down within a few miles. Similarly, see the figures for that unfortunate British Armoured Brigade equipped with captured Italian tanks when Rommel showed up. It basically evaporated on the first day — and I’m not sure it even engaged the Germans.

Reliability isn’t everything — but it matters, and it did vary. A 37 mm gun on a tank that’s still running beats a 50 mm gun on a tank that’s broken down.

Well then, let’s turn our attention to some real world confrontations between German Panther tanks and American Shermans from WWII.
The following video is titled ‘2 SS Panthers vs. 21 US Shermans’ (you need only watch the few minutes from 4:45 – 9:00), to determine which of the tanks you’d rather be in:

SUMMARY: The Panthers were rushed into service in mid 1943 at the Battle of Kursk without the necessary reliability trials. Needless to say, they had breakdown issues as one would expect.
These problems were soon ironed out and, by war’s end, the Panther was regarded by tank experts as the best overall designed tank of WWII (in a comparison between tanks from either side that were produced in at least moderate quantities).

Meanwhile, UR readers may be interested to read how the M-4 Sherman tanks compared to the German Tiger tanks. Read the following excerpt and make up your own mind:

The 761st [a Negro Tank Battalion] fought heroically as part of Patton’s Third Army. It struggled with racism during its training period in America prior to its deployment in Europe.
After its deployment, it was sent into battle in M-4 Sherman tanks, which were characterised (in the book ‘ Brothers in Arms: The Epic Story of the 761st Tank Battalion, WWII’s Forgotten Heroes’), as “one of the deadliest military design failures in history” and “children’s toys” compared to the German Tiger.

Offensively, the Sherman was armed with a 75mm gun whose shells “bounced harmlessly off the sides of German tanks.” Defensively, the Sherman “lacked sufficient armour for frontal attacks against fixed defensive positions.”
The numbers tell the story. The Tiger’s 88 millimetre gun could cut through the Sherman’s armour like a hot knife through butter from 1,200 metres away, but in order to have any effect with their 75 mm gun, “American tanks had to close to a range of 400 metres.”

The first three tanks and their crews were sacrificed in the hope that the fourth could get close enough behind the Tiger to fire a round into the thinner armour which protected the Tiger’s diesel engine.

The Shermans were powered by two Cadillac engines, which gave them speed and mobility advantages over the Tiger, but the engines ran on gasoline, which was more flammable than diesel and produced a raging inferno when an 88mm shell hit the fuel tank or deadly carbon monoxide when the exhaust got blocked.
Learning their tanks’ design shortcomings firsthand, Sherman crews named them “Iron Coffins” or “Ronsons,” (after a brand of cigarette lighter whose motto was “Lights up every time”).

This is nice, and I agree German tanks were impressive — but you’re missing the point.

Simple reliability is a major component of military usefulness. A Sherman that is running is a better tank than a Panther or T-34 that isn’t.

And, as I pointed out earlier, once the initial reliability issues were remedied (and they ALL were by the time Panthers encountered Shermans in strength in the aftermath of D-Daye), the Panthers and Tigers shredded the Shermans like confetti.

To emphasis the degree to which German tanks ran roughshod over the flimsy M4 Shermans, let’s compare the number of tank kills recorded by the leading tank commanders on the respective sides.
The leading German tank aces of WWII were:

1) Kurt Knispel … 168 tank kills
2) Otto Carius …. 150 tank kills
3) Michael Wittmann …. minimum of 138 tank kills (some sources state he scored 150 + ).

There are several other German tank aces credited with 100 + kills.

Let’s compare that to the leading U.S ‘Ace of Aces’ (yes, that’s what the Americans called this guy), from WWII:

i) Lafayette G. Pool ….. Twelve (12) kills (all with his M4 Sherman).

Pool survived the war, but not quite intact. In September 1944, while trying to penetrate the Siegfried line, his M4 Sherman encountered a Panther:

Positioned precariously on the edge of a ditch, the tank was tipped over by the second round.
The round killed Pool’s replacement gunner, Private First Class Paul Kenneth King, and threw Pool out of the commander’s hatch, severely injuring him in the leg with shrapnel. The leg was so badly mangled that it would later be amputated 8 inches above the knee.

And so goes the tale of the ‘reliable Shermans’.
Yes, they were reliable. You could rely on them to get killed.

You’re probably right. On the bright side, having been in thirty-odd countries, I found Japanese to be among the most reliably helpful of all the peoples I’ve encountered. In fact, as a connoisseur of approaching people as a conspicuous foreigner who can’t speak the language, I’d rank Japanese as tied with Portuguese for first. The distinction would seem to be that Portuguese help just because they’re friendly, while the Japanese seem to assume an unlimited obligation on their part to solve your problem. In fact, after a few experiences of being led for twenty minutes across town to where I wanted to go, I started asking policemen in kiosks for directions. Not because I particularly like cops, but because the policeman physically couldn’t leave his post, so he’d have to settle for just pointing me in the right direction, which was all I really wanted to make anyone do.

Ron, you’re probably already aware of this, but for the edification of other UR readers, this is what Wikipedia has to say about the great Libertarian Murray Rothbard and his position on the Holohoax:

Rothbard embraced “historical revisionism” as an antidote to what he perceived to be the dominant influence exerted by corrupt “court intellectuals” over mainstream historical narratives. His friend Harry Elmer Barnes, the Holocaust-denying historian, used similar language, “court historians”.
Rothbard characterised the revisionist task as “penetrating the fog of lies and deception of the State and its Court Intellectuals, and to present to the public the true history”.

Williamson wrote an opinion piece published by National Review which condemned Rothbard for “making common cause with the ‘revisionist’ historians of the Third Reich”, a term he used to describe American Holocaust deniers associated with Rothbard, such as James J. The piece also characterised “Rothbard and his faction” as being “culpably indulgent” of Holocaust denial, the view which “specifically denies that the Holocaust actually happened or holds that it was in some way exaggerated”.

Pretty good description. It’s not a problem that the iSteve blog is dominated by the West Coast community topics and the commentators are mostly those stereotypical Yanks we see in holiday movies as tourists abroad. Mostly, they are brainwashed coke-drinkers and macca-eaters, who have been persuaded by the narrative leaders that they are exceptional. Arrogance and stupidity are their main character traits. True, some are funny and remind of the leading characters of the movie Dumb&Dumber.

If you mention something outside their field of vision, they are immediately hostile and patronizing towards you. If you accidentally point on some falsifications in the official narrative (e.g. in old, pre-Yanks, history or 9/11, etc), then they will explain to you from a superior height and without any specific knowledge what the unquestionable truth is.

I’ve had at least two accidental encounters of the third kind with two specimens who got annoyed when I wrote something that couldn’t fit into their brain circuits. For the sake of story, let’s call them PsychoD and Jaydotross.

However, Steve is a basketball buff and the occasional basketball write-up is quite informative and attracts a large number of people with excellent basketball knowledge. Currently, there is one about a good Mexican basketball player (not an oxymoron). And I always appear there when I notice some text, since the top basketball seems to be played only by blacks and Serbs. There are also good texts dedicated to the vintage music where comments from good connoisseurs also appear.

No, actually I don’t think that that is what is happening.

I think this is due to a very significant and dramatic change in Steve over the last two years.

I am one of the most senior commenters on Steve’s blog: I was commenting on his old blog before you brought him over to unz.com, so I have been able to follow the evolution of Steve’s behavior longer than most other commenters here.

And I have posted various controversial comments on his blog over the years – for example, criticizing Christianity – which Steve had no problem with letting through.

In fact, by normal standards, I have views that are less inflammatory than most of his commenters: compared to most of his commenters, for example, I would count as a “philo-Semite” (to be sure, I am not really either a philo-Semite or an anti-Semite: I simply apply the same standards to Jews and to Gentiles alike). And, unlike many of his commenters, I am not a White supremacist. That Steve allows very blatant anti-Semitic and White supremacist comments to be posted indicates that what is going on currently is really not just a matter of Steve being “unwilling to allow contrasting views on various touchy subjects.”

The problem is foreign policy: to put it bluntly, Steve has turned his coat. In the last couple years or so, Steve has gone over to the side of the Empire and has turned against the American Republic and the American people.

Steve is of course famous for inventing the phrase “Invade the World, Invite the World” as a critique of American foreign policy and immigration policy, and Steve is also famous for spreading the meme of the “Deep State” to describe the military-intelligence-bureaucratic complex that has displaced the American Republic.

That Steve of all people has turned his coat and now serves the Hegemon is therefore especially sad.

But that really is what has happened.

The comments by me that Steve is blocking are comments in which I am denouncing the ongoing genocide in Gaza by America’s “ally” Israel, a genocide made possible by arms being supplied by the US.

Current polls indicate that a majority of the US population wants a cease-fire and an end to the genocide in Gaza: my view on this is hardly controversial. Indeed, it is one of the least controversial views I or anyone has voiced in Steve’s comment section.

But it is unacceptable to Steve: Steve has gone over to the Deep State that he once heroically denounced.

If I were conspiracy-minded, I would suggest that Steve had a visit from some very serious men in dark suits who warned him of what could happen to dissidents – vide Liz Magill or, even more, Julian Assange. Maybe they even offered the proverbial thirty pieces of silver.

In the world of 2024, that is, alas, not unthinkable.

But, quite frankly, I doubt that Steve is important enough to warrant that level of attention.

My suspicion is that it is merely a matter that people, as they reach their final decades, tend to become more conservative and conformist and more seeking of acceptance and approval. Steve is getting old.

Steve and some of his admirers have suggested on various occasions that he could have been really successful had he toed the Deep State line. But that is not really true – Steve is no Tucker Carlson or Candace Owens or even Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh. Steve is an ex-marketing guy who knows how to take publicly available data and use it to illustrate what all adults (Blacks, Whites, liberals, or conservative) already know: e.g., Blacks commit more crimes than Whites, Asians do better academically than Hispanics, etc.

Sailer’s shtick has been simply to say these things publicly, whereas most people just express them in private conversations.

The one point on which Steve really could claim some originality was his emphasis on “Invade the World, Invite the World” and on the “Deep State.” And Steve has now turned against that.

I myself first realized that this was happening when Putin finally had had enough of the crimes against humanity being committed by the US and its puppet in Kiev against the people of the Donbass almost two years ago. Sailer could not grasp why so many of us denounced the 2014 Maidan coup d’etat orchestrated by the US Deep State and the US propping up of the neo-Nazi puppet regime in Kiev.

That was the canary in the coal mine with regard to Steve.

But the final breaking point came with the genocide in Gaza: Steve clearly will not tolerate those of us who loudly and uncompromisingly denounce what most of the world recognizes to be crimes against humanity by the US and its client state in the Gaza Strip.

Again, it is very sad that Steve has gone over to the Deep State. But that is very, very clearly what has happened.

This, alas, is very common among dissident movements in the history of the US. Jemmy Madison, the most famous associate of Thomas Jefferson, governed as a Federalist, not a Jeffersonian, when he became President.

And, in the twentieth century, the young radical Walter Lippmann became a stalwart pillar of the Establishment, the young Trot Irving Kristol become the father of neoconservatism, etc.

I myself have observed this up-close and personal among libertarians: when I was a grad student at Stanford back around 1980, I was friends with Williamson Evers, one of Murray Rothbard’s closest associates. Bill was a fiery radical libertarian: I myself worked on Bill’s Congressional campaign when he ran as a Libertarian.

As late as 1990 or so, Bill chastised some of us here in Sacramento for daring to invite as a speaker Professor Joseph Fuhrig. Joe’s sin, in Bill’s eyes, was that Joe had spoken to a meeting of Republicans. Joe was in fact an outspoken libertarian and was not a Republican, but merely speaking to a gathering of Republicans was enough to anathematize Joe in Bill’s eyes!

But within a decade or so, Bill had completely flipped: to quote from his Wikipedia article:

In the late 1990s, Evers began to work in the Republican Party, serving on George W. Bush’s transition team after the 2000 election and acting as a Bush adviser in the 2000 and 2004 campaigns and as a McCain adviser in 2008 and a Romney adviser in the 2012 presidential elections. I’m not condemning this, merely showing how dramatically a radical political activist can change his coat: from Bill’s condemning a person for merely speaking to a group of Republicans to Bill himself becoming an actual Republican apparatchik.

The one thing that does stick in my throat a bit is the following, also from Wikipedia:

I can grasp how Bill might have convinced himself that he might do some good by advising even scum like John McCain.

I quoted in its entirety in my comment above to which you replied one of my comments which Steve chose to censor. Anyone can read it and see that it was not insulting to anyone, did not use coarse language, and in fact made a rather obvious point.

But it is no longer acceptable to the 2024 version of Steve Sailer, although he seems to still have no problem with various anti-Semitic and White supremacist comments.

Like my old friend Bill Evers, Steve has gone over to the side of evil.

Ron, I’ve only read the first few pages of your ‘Holocaust Denial History’ link, and there’s a ton of B.S that I’ve already observed. For instance, on page 4 it states:

I doubt that very much.

Those that have done the extensive research like I have, utilising reputable sources, know the Holohoax is a fraud. Irrespective of what country they’re from, they’ve come to this conclusion because:

Well, I have some common ground with the author here. This certainly was a false equivalency.

If you actually want to run for political office anywhere outside of a few enclaves, you have to support Israel. Politicians who have failed to do that have vanished. Pete McCloskey. Tulsi Gabbard.

So they all love Israel now. All one can do is try and gauge how sincere and enthusiastic they are. Ron DeSantis loves Israel — but Niki Haley loves it even more. Sanders? Maybe not so much. But they all ‘support Israel.’ It’s like being for Social Security. Any other stance is death.

Now, let’s suppose you don’t want to actually run for office — but you do want a mainstream voice. Well, Elon Musk is pretty much defining the freedom of maneuver that permits. He has to visit Israel, say October 7th was awful. Tucker Carlson is another. He never attacks Israel — but he does manage to avoid praising it.

If you want to be even within shouting distance of the mainstream, that’s about all you’re permitted.

By the way, and since I’m on a free association spree, I might add that the name of the interviewer in the video I linked to (Ellwanger) reminded me of the most notorious Holocaust Denier in Brazil — Siegfried Ellwanger, who published as S.E. Castan, and founded a publishing house devoted to this kind of book. I haven’t read any of his books (one or more of which have been translated to English), so I can’t say anything about them. But I know that he was constantly harassed by the law and finally convicted, though I don’t think he served time in prison. He was a very persistent fellow — I think he had been a successful industrialist, therefore was independently wealthy — and sold his books personally at times. At one occasion he was selling them at a book fair and a Jewish guy saw it and denounced him. His books had already been banned, but he kept on printing and selling them. I think that led to his conviction.
I think the most famous title by Castan was “Holocaust — Jewish or German?”. I remember another title because it tries to be funny: “Acabou o Gás” (“We’re Out of Gas”).

What was rather shocking was the turn-around in roughly ten years from Bill’s intense and rather unreasonable antipathy towards Republicans to his actually working closely within a pretty despicable Republican administration.

Anyway, I was just using the example of a guy you and I both knew to illustrate how people can change their spots pretty dramatically, often as they get old.

I have been criticizing Israel publicly for well over forty years, probably before you were born.

Oddly enough, I just found out that I can actually prove this! Go here and read the column by me on the right side of page 4 that I wrote for the campus paper at Stanford in January 1979.

The tl; dr version:

In particular, both justice and realism demand that the state of Israel as presently constituted — i.e., as the Jewish homeland and as a Jewish state — must cease to exist.

Specifically:

1) Israel must return all stolen property and land to its rightful Arab owners, and all refugees who have fled Palestine must be allowed to freely return.

2) Civil liberties must be extended to all inhabitants of Israel whatever their race, creed, ethnic group or national origin. The arbitrary and capricious military government of occupied areas must be replaced by the objective and impartial rule of law.

3) Laws and state institutions favoring Jews or Judaism— the establishment of the Orthodox Rabbinate, the favoring of Jews in immigration, laws enforcing the Jewish Sabbath, etc. — must be abolished.

4) Finally, those symbols which identify the current regime as Jewish — the name Israel, the establishment of Hebrew as the official language, the star of David in the Israeli flag, etc. — should be replaced.

Well… as I have said, I have been following Steve for more than fifteen years, since before his blog was hosted here on unz.com. I’m afraid I have trouble believing that the guy who spread the “Deep State” meme is himself actually a loyal operative of the Deep State!

I think it’s gotta be something else. It is conceivable that some Deep State guys actually threatened him, but frankly I don’t think he is important enough to warrant that. It is more possible that he is influenced by some big contributors, but, frankly, most human beings are not really all that mercenary.

So… I am inclined to think it is more subtle, most probably just getting old and cautious and wanting to — finally! — fit in.

The funny thing is, as you suggest, that the views Steve used to embrace are now supported by a larger fraction of the populace than those views were when Steve was pushing them, in some cases, now by a majority. But “fitting in” is usually not a matter of getting majority approval; it is usually a matter of “fitting in”with the “right people,” the “Inner Ring,” to use the phrase of C. S. Lewis (see here for his interesting essay on the matter).

Steve is of course pretty much a “no excuses /no explanations / no apologies” kind of guy (hey — it is his sandbox!), so we’ll probably never know.

But, Occam’s Razor — it seems to me the simplest explanation. To be sure, not everyone ages in this way: if you read my college opinion column to which I linked above, I think you will agree that I am at least as radical today as I was back then. It’s not that I wouldn’t sorta like to be celebrated by my fellow physicists, to win a Nobel prize and all the rest, but, to be perfectly honest, all that sounds a little boring to me. But most people are not like me, it seems.

This growing desire for approval and acceptance and avoidance of conflict does seem to be what happens to most people as they get old.

Tibet was a weak country, and China took over without a war. Perfect. Was Tibet a threat to China? None at all. But his theory is “paranoid”. Countries are always imagining danger and acting to suppress it.
On the other hand, take Hamas and Israel. Hamas is clearly dangerous to Israel, but Mearsheimer says it is not an “existential” danger. Well, the weaselling begins there. Of course China was allowed to be paranoid about Tibet, but Israel isn’t. Why?
Then, Mearsheimer goes on to say his theory applies only between countries, and Hamas isn’t a country. He say it’s more like a civil war. I suppose that would preclude the one-state solution for that region, because civil war would plague it indefinitely. Are you in favor of a two-state solution? Hamas does not seem very keen on accepting it.

Mearsheimer aside, I see three primary differences between Tibet and Palestine.

1. The Chinese are perfectly willing to let the Tibetans stay and be assimilated. The Jews offer no such option to the Palestinians. It’s Nazis and untermenschen time there.

2. Tibet, we can’t do much about. Zionism, we can pull the plug on any time.

3. We made Israel, and it couldn’t continue to exist without our sponsorship. China annexing Tibet, we had no say in.

China would never let the Tibetans become a majority in China. That’s the limit of their ‘assimilation’. Israel also has an Arab population which will never be allowed to become a majority. Of course Tibetan activism would be a no-no as well, but that was never an issue. A better example of this would be the Uyghurs. Uyghur activism is strictly reppressed. But the situations are different and no bombing was required, unlike in Israel, where Hamas had foreign backing and a whole territory at its disposal to plan its attacks and hide within.
